Stems 1 to few upright. Basal leaves with 2–10 in. petioles, nearly round, often heart-shaped, 1–4 in. across, shiny, entire or slightly toothed. Flower stem 2–12 in. tall with 1–2 flowers. Flower with 5–12 petal-like sepals that are white, with greenish yellow center, often stained blue on underside. Grows in marshes, streambanks, pond edges, at high elevations. Often found at the edge of snowmelt.
