Erect stems branched in upper section. Leaves on lower part of stem, shiny, nearly round, divided into 3–10 lobes. Flowers on 1/2–3 in. stalks, scarlet to orange-red, occasionally dull yellow, facing outward; spur straight, 1/2–1 in. long. Grows in lightly shaded woods, moist rocky slopes, from coast to high elevations.
