Red Bells

Stems erect, unbranched. Stems bare on bottom, with midstem whorls of 3–5 leaves, single leaves alternating at top with flower stalks from leaf axils. Leaves narrow, thinly coated with bluish powder. Flowers on short stalks, nodding, bell-shaped, with tips recurved, scarlet with yellow mottling. Grows in dry woods, shrubs, on hillsides in shade, at low to mid elevations. Rare and endangered F. gentneri is similar and grows in same range; flower tips are straight or slightly flared; plant is deeper, more maroon shade of red.
