Mat, dioecious. Stem with 4 sides when young. Leaves in whorls of 4, linear, thick, hairless or with bristly hairs on edges, pointed tips. Flowers yellowish, male flowers in clusters, female flowers single in leaf axil with very hairy ovary and fruit. Grows in Siskiyou Mountains in light shade. Var. ambiguum, which grows in similar range and habitat, has thin leaves, with female flowers and fruit only lightly hairy.
