Erect. Stem often with long branches becoming shorter upward. Leaves 5–8 pairs, egg-shaped at base, becoming lance-shaped on upper stem. Flowers in crowded clusters at tips of stem and branches, blue, rosy lavender, or creamy white, with lance-shaped bracts at base of clusters. Flower lobes 4 or 5, without appendages between lobes, fringe of hairs on inner surface of each lobe nearly as long as lobe. Grows in open woods, thickets, wet meadows, along roads and moist areas, at low to high elevations.
