Lathyrus lanszwertii

Mountain Pea

Stems ascending or climbing, angled but without wings. Midvein extends beyond leaf tip to form a short stubby tendril (var. aridus) or long winding tendril (var. lanszwertii). Leaf bears 6–10 leaflets opposite one another, or alternate and scattered. Flowers 2–10, white, cream, purple, or lavender, on stalk above leaves. Grows in open meadows, dry woodlands, forests, at low to mid-elevations. Similar L. torreyi, Torrey's pea, has leaves shorter and wider, lightly coated with hairs, tendril reduced to bristles; grows mostly at low elevations but found to 5200 ft.
