Erect, white-woolly, branched, square stems. Leaves opposite, with short petioles, egg-shaped to round, round-toothed. Flowers in whorls around stem at base of leaves. Flower with 2 lips, the upper rounded or divided into 2 sharp points, the lower larger. Grows in roadsides, disturbed dry soils, especially overgrazed areas. Native of Europe, grows worldwide. Traditionally used as a cough remedy.
