One-Flowered Moneses

Single upright stem from mostly basal leaves. Leaves oval to round, not leathery, 1–2 in. long, with sharp to rounded teeth, raised veins. Single nodding flower, waxy, fragrant, white or occasionally pale pink, 5 petals and 10 stamens with filaments that are wider at the base. Flower center with large, rounded, green ovary with long style and prominent stigma. Grows in mossy places or on rotting wood in deep coniferous forests from coastline to mid-elevations. Out of flower can be confused with Orthilia secunda, which has similar leaves.
