Erect, 1 or few flower stems, milky sap. Foliage covered with dense matted hairs. Leaves long, narrow, wavy-edged, sometimes toothed. A leafless 2–14 in. stem carries a single erect yellow flower head. Thirteen or more extended ray-like disk flowers open early morning, close about midday. Grows in dry, sandy or open rocky soils at mid elevations.
