Baby Elephant's Head

Erect stem topped with dense flower spike. Leaves mostly basal, more or less linear, divided to center into 12 or more pairs of toothed segments; alternate stem leaves same, smaller. Inflorescence 1–12 in. long, very hairy, flowers between shorter bracts. Flowers lavender to pink with purple markings; short upper lip curving upward; 3 lower lobes spreading fan-like give the look of an elephant's head. Found along streams and in wet meadows at high elevations, including Steens Mountain. Similar to P. groenlandica, which does not have dense hairs in the inflorescence.
