Tuft of long, narrow, spreading to upright leaves, erect stalk. Plant without hairs except flower stalk. Leaf 1–6 in. long, fleshy, tapering to base but not stalked. Flowers numerous in dense spike 1–4 in. long atop stalk just longer than leaves. Flowers, green stamens not exserted. Grows on rocky shorelines, salt marshes, bluffs, river edges near coast.
