Erect stems stout. Leaves few, less than 2 in. wide, in basal rosette, lance-shaped, with pointed tip; stem leaves sessile. Inflorescence at stem top, often single large flower, sometimes several. Flower consists of a cup of few leafy bracts, lance-shaped and with papery edges; bristly hairs fill center; yellow florets at edge are inconspicuous among hairs. Grows in open prairies, hillsides. Var. cusickii is smaller, 3–16 in., with stems often decumbent, flower bracts of cup long and narrow with pointed tips and not overlapping; grows above 6000 ft. on barren rocky soils.
