Swamp Buttercup

Erect to prostrate, softly hairy to shiny. Stems to 40 in. long. Basal and lower stem leaves with petioles 2–8 in. long, divided into 3–5 coarsely toothed segments; upper leaves smaller, divided into 3 narrow lobes. Flowers yellow; petals 5–8, about half as wide as long. Seeds clustered in ball have prominent straight beaks pointing straight out. Grows in wet open areas, along streams, beaches and tidal marshes, woodlands, forests, from sea level to high elevations. Ortho is Greek for "straight and rhynchus beak," in reference to the seeds.
