Oregon Fetid Adder's Tongue

Leaves 2, opposite, with or without mottling, from underground stem, oval, with pointed tip, 3–6 in. long, green, with many ribbed veins. Flowers smell like dead meat, on slender stalks to 8 in.; 3 broad spreading sepals mottled with yellow and purple; 3 petals very narrow, held upright; 3 stamens. Grows in damp shaded woods. Larger S. bigelovii, California fetid adder's tongue, has distinctly mottled leaves 4–8 in. long; flowers with 3 slightly recurved green with red-purple sepals, 3 narrow upward- or inward-pointing petals; found in moist woods, redwoods, only in Curry County, Oregon, and Humboldt County, California.
