Clasping Twisted Stalk
Stems upright, repeatedly branched. Stems smooth, often bent at nodes and looking zigzagged. Leaves oval with sharp point, 3–6 in. long, surrounding or clasping stem. Yellow, cream, or white bell-shaped flowers hang under leaves on sharply kinked or twisted stalks, tips flaring out and curving upward. Berries watermelon red. Grows in moist rich soils in forests, woods, along streams, from near coastline to mid elevations.
