Upright weak stem, smooth, straight, sometimes branched. Leaves 1/3–1/2 in. long, lowest leaves on petioles and broad, middle leaves divided into 3 lobes; upper leaves often entire and sessile. One or sometimes 2 small flowers on a short stalk arising from pair of leaf-like bracts. Flowers white in center with broken dark markings, violet on outer edges; lower petal lobe is larger and wider than other 4. Grows in moist rocky soils, often shaded by scrub oaks, at low to mid elevations.
