Trifolium pratense
Hairy plant, ascending stems. Leaves on stems divided palmately; 3 leaflets 1/2–1 1/2 in., egg-shaped, with lighter central patch. Flower head at top, bright deep red, uppermost leaf with bract-like stipules surrounding flower head. Grows in disturbed soils at low to mid elevations. Important forage crop originally from Europe, often planted in fields, along roadsides; makes large displays in spring. Recently thought to be toxic to horses.
