Prostrate to erect, tiny to robust, generally hairless. Leaves on stems divided palmately to 3 oblong leaflets, coarsely toothed. Stipules at leaf axil sharply toothed. Flower head base has many long needle-like spines supporting upward-pointing flowers. Flowers deep purple or pink, changing to pale pink or white near tip. Grows in wet to vernal-wet soils in meadows, open ground.
