Decumbent to ascending stems. Leaves mostly basal, few alternate on stem, palmately divided, three 1 in. long leaflets, oval, finely toothed. Flower head about 1 in. wide with many flowers, supported by base of flat, fused, sharp-tipped bracts. Flowers pale to dark purple with white tips. Grows in moist to marshy places, beaches to mountain meadows. Form found at higher altitudes has much smaller flowers.
