Floating aquatic. Leaves divided many times into dense thread-like bristles. Small bladders along leaf margins trap small organisms when entrance hairs are triggered. Flowers 5–20, held on 1–12 in. stalks above water, yellow; 2 lips more or less equal in size, upper lip not lobed, lower lip with 3 shallow lobes; spur curved, shorter than lower lip. Grows in quiet waters. Forms ball-like, bristly winter buds. Circumboreal. Similar introduced U. inflata has a spoke-like float to support flower stalk.
