Clustered upright leaves and flower stems from running underground stolons. Leaf elongated, heart-shaped, entire, on 2–4 in. petioles. Flowers lavender to pale blue, 3 lower petals with darker veins. Lower petal larger, with pointed nectar spur. Grows in swampy places from coastline to subalpine.
