Prairie Violet

Cluster of upright stems, leaves. Leaves narrowly oval to egg-shaped, edges wavy or toothed, 1–3 in., often hairy. Flower bright yellow, lower 3 petals with maroon veins. The 2 side petals are bearded. The upper 2 petal backs often change to maroon when mature. Grows in moist to dry open woods, meadows, at mid to high elevations. Subsp. linguifolia has leaves on stem much longer than wide, wavy-edged or sparsely toothed, with tapered bases. Subsp. praemorsa has leaves on stem almost as wide as long, regularly toothed. The wide base of the leaf blade narrows suddenly.
