Tuft upright from single root. Plant hairless. Leaves mostly basal with petioles, much divided, segments linear, shiny green to bluish. Flowers usually solitary, atop long stalks; buds erect from base with wide round rim, pointed at tip; 4 petals, in shades of orange to yellow, 1–2 in. wide, many stamens. Grows in grassy or open areas from sea level to high elevations. State flower of California.
