Erect to decumbent flower stalks from rosette of many leaves. Narrow leaves 1–10 in. long in rosette, hairless; stem leaves are shorter, if present. Single flower head with many lavender to deep purple rays. Grows in meadows, moist gravelly slopes, in subalpine and alpine of Blue, Wallowa, and Steens mountains.
