Erect, hairless, unbranched to branched. Leaves narrow, linear, 1/2–1 1/2 in. long. Flowers in dense spike, bracts like leaves, shorter, green. Flower calyx divided unevenly, hairy; flower pale yellow to orange, with straight beak, stigma extending upward. Grows in spring-wet pools, moist places, at low elevations to treeline.
