Beach Strawberry
Mat of short, rooting, prostrate stems. Leaves large, thick, leathery, divided into 3 leaflets. Leaflets almost round, round-toothed, densely hairy on underside. Central tooth on leaf is shorter than its neighbors. Flowers 5–9 on leafless stalks. Flower white, large, 3/4–1 in. across, with 5 petals. Strawberry is small. Grows in ocean dunes and beaches, into adjacent grasslands. One of the parents of cultivated strawberries.
