Stems erect or stemless, leaves pointing upward. Rhizomes creeping to 12 in. Leaves evergreen, light yellowish green, about 1/4 in. wide, pink or red at base. Flower stem to 8 in., holds 2 flowers. Flowers white sometimes tinged blue, or cream to pale yellow with darker veining, perianth tube 1 1/2–4 in. long and slender, narrow petals held horizontal to the ground. Grows in open forests, woodlands, at low elevations.
