Mat with upward-pointing stems. Leaves gray or green, widely spaced. Leaflets 3–5, irregularly spaced, oval, with rounded tips, wavy hairs. Flower heads on lower part of plant on long, branched stalks; upper are nearly sessile. Flower heads with 3–12 bright yellow flowers. Grows in open oak, pine, or fir forests, fern-laden meadows, at mid to high elevations.
