Widely spreading, with upright flower stalks. Stems and leaves coated with silvery hairs. Lower leaves with long stalks, often withered by blooming; stem leaves with 5–7 narrowly oval leaflets 1–2 in. long. Flower stems with 3–6 in. spike. Flower spur behind silky-haired banner, flower violet-blue, upper petal arching upright, wings hairless. Grows in open hillsides, pine forests, sagebrush-steppe, at mid to high elevations.
