Plant stem straight, erect, seldom branched, yellow-green, sometimes tinted purple and covered with small glands, with long, coarse, stiff hairs. Leaves dark green, long, thin, with pointed tip, drying to blackish; upper leaves deeply lobed. Flower spike narrow; bracts divided into 3 pointed lobes, with central lobe largest. Flowers golden yellow, extending beyond bracts. Grows in moist meadows, sagebrush openings, at high elevations.
