Basal leaf rosette. Stem stout, unbranched. Basal leaves gray-haired, 1/3–2 in. long, widest at tip end; stem leaves few, smaller. Flower head single with more than 40 ray flowers, blue or violet, 1/2–1 in. long, large yellow disk. Grows on rocky ridges in high steppe, subalpine, alpine.
